Link a supplier offer to the exact child ASIN, never to a family based only on a similar title or image. Compare the authorized identifiers, brand, model, size, color, volume, and the number of units sold. A mismatch on any commercial attribute blocks the match, even if the parent product looks identical. Also keep the marketplace: Amazon returns catalog data, relationships, and identifiers within that context. If the supplier does not prove the packaging, or if the ASIN is a variation parent, put the candidate in review before any price analysis.
Parent, child, and offer are not interchangeable
An Amazon page can group several variants under a parent-child relationship. The parent organizes the family; the children carry the combinations actually distinguished in the catalog. The official Catalog Items API exposes variation relationships, attributes, identifiers, images, and summaries by marketplace.
This structure implies three distinct objects:
| Object | Role | Risk if confused |
|---|---|---|
| Supplier product | orderable, invoiced item | buying the wrong variant |
| Child ASIN | Amazon item identified within a marketplace | analyzing the wrong price or rank |
| Seller offer | price, condition, and availability specific to the seller | confusing the catalog with the commercial listing |

Start with identifiers, finish with attributes
The Amazon API allows searching for and retrieving catalog items using identifiers such as ASIN, EAN, GTIN, or UPC depending on the operation and access level. A matching identifier is a strong signal, but it must still be linked to the correct variant.
GS1 explains that variations of a trade item — for example model, color, size, weight, or presentation — use distinct references whenever the market needs to distinguish them. The same GTIN repeated across conflicting variants is therefore an anomaly worth examining. The method on duplicate GTINs across variants should come before any merge.
Identification procedure:
1. Preserve the raw GTIN, SKU, MPN, and title from the supplier. 2. Validate the GTIN's format without inferring its full identity. 3. Query the Amazon catalog through an authorized channel and fix the marketplace. 4. Determine whether the candidate ASIN is a parent, a child, or a bundle. 5. Compare the returned identifiers along with their types. 6. Check every variant attribute. 7. Verify the batch content and the selling unit. 8. Record the evidence and any discrepancies.
A matching GTIN must not erase an explicit conflict in quantity or size. The source code may be wrong, or it may be attributed to the carton rather than the individual unit.
Treating packaging as a blocking attribute
"Same product" does not mean "same commercial offer." A single bottle and a three-pack can share the brand, design, and almost the entire title. The unit count must come from a structured field, an official label, or packaging evidence — never from counting objects visible in an image.
Keep separately:
sellable_units: the number of consumer units sold per offer;unit_measure: volume, weight, or another explicit measure;supplier_order_pack: the quantity imposed by the supplier;amazon_package_hierarchy: the package relationship returned, if available;gtin_level: the unit or packaging level identified, when documented.
A supplier carton of twelve units can feed a single-unit Amazon offer. This only works if the received product actually contains twelve identical sellable units and if the invoice/documentation proves it. The carton's GTIN must not be copied as the GTIN of each individual unit.
Comparing images without giving them the final word
Amazon can return images by marketplace, and the supplier may provide its own main image. Check the printed text, color, volume, and unit count, but give less weight to the visual when it is generic. Old packaging can differ without the item itself changing; conversely, the same visual can be reused across several sizes.
Image-and-name matching without an EAN can suggest candidates when identifiers are missing. It must never automatically resolve a packaging discrepancy.
Making the decision reversible
Assign each candidate an explicit status: confirmed, conflict, insufficient, or needs review. Record the marketplace, the ASIN, the date, the compared attributes, the official source, and who made the decision. Do not overwrite the source data; create a versioned mapping table instead.
If Amazon or the supplier later changes a title or image, the original evidence remains available. A change to an identifier, size, or variation relationship triggers a new review. For a rollout across several markets, the method for mapping the same product across several Amazon marketplaces should re-examine the context of each marketplaceId.
Canary matching test
Before linking a full catalog, prepare hard cases: a variation parent, an exact child, a nearby size, a similar color, single unit versus multipack, old packaging, and a generic image. The test should confirm that blocking discrepancies cannot be compensated for by a similar title.
Measure false positives separately from unresolved candidates. When in doubt, a line placed in review is preferable to a wrong ASIN that distorts price, fees, restrictions, and orders.
Checklist before validating the ASIN
- The Amazon marketplace is fixed.
- The candidate ASIN is classified as parent, child, or bundle.
- The source GTIN is kept and checked.
- Brand and model match.
- Size, color, volume, and weight do not contradict each other.
- The number of units sold is proven.
- The supplier carton is distinct from the consumer offer.
- Images are not used as the sole evidence.
- Conflicts trigger a review, not an average.
- The decision is dated, sourced, and reversible.
What ArbitragePro+ can automate / what the seller must verify
The proposed specification file-revue-correspondances could extract Amazon relationships, compare blocking attributes, and present candidates with their evidence. It should forbid automatic validation when size, color, or quantity conflict.
The seller must confirm the marketplace, the product received, the packaging contents, data access rights, and the final match before calculating an opportunity.
